Design Principles- Value

Part 1:

I learned a lot about value, value is the artistic work for light and dark. A new word that relates to value is achromatic grays which are grays that are a mix of white and black that's used when making a value scale. I also learned a few more terms like value contrast, value contrast is "the relationship between areas of dark and light." A fun fact that was stated in the slides is that "the human eye can discern about 40 different variations in value" that to me is very interesting because who knew there were even that many different shades of gray and they're simply made with two colors. Another fun fact is that yellow is considered a high value color and purple is considered a low value color. Another new term that I learned from the slides is value pattern, value pattern is "the arrangement and the amount of change in light and dark, separate from the colors used." The slides then start to go into focal points and how value is used to create focal points many times in art along with using contrast. Another new term that I learned is value emphasis which is "high dark and light contrast instantly attracts our attention." Another way value can be used is to create volume, it can help create an illusion of depth and space. The slides mention aerial or atmospheric perspective which is when our vision makes things seem further because of the fact that they're a grayish blueish color. There are different types of techniques when it comes to using value in your art pieces like shading, hatching, doing (pointillism) and also doing wash drawings and using mixed medias. Lastly, value is mostly used in newspapers, books and magazines, overall I learned a lot about value and all the aspects that come with it.

Part 2:

After doing the exercise it helped me realize just how many shades of gray we can make, I had already done a value scale before but its a cool thing because no matter how many times you make one its always going to turn out different and always going to give you a different shade of gray even if you don't believe it so I think that's very cool.
